Trivia Suggestion That Works

To restrict the "rattle" from loose fitting flat or raised panel doors, you can purchase various sizes of neoprene windshield washer hose from any automotive parts store and place between your stile/rail panel to eliminate the "rattle".

At Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding, we import the majority of our Spanish Cedar lumber.  Lumber is imported air died and we scientifically kiln dry our Spanish Cedar at custom dry kilns.  Botanically, Spanish Cedar is classified as a hardwood and not a softwood.  American Cedars are classified as softwoods.

Most Spanish Cedar will "bleed" through the surface finish (wood stain or paint).  We import our Spanish Cedar from a region of South America where the stock has little or no evidence of "bleeding" through the surface finish.  See Washcoats.

Spanish Cedar is a must for humidors, great for cabinets, furniture and is an excellent choice for exterior applications....shutters, decks, doors, mouldings, etc.

Cherry, Appalachian

Prunus serotina

For centuries, American Cherry has been a favorite of cabinet makers, furniture manufacturers and for fine floors and wall paneling.  Geography has a lot to do with the color of Cherry lumber. At Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding, our Appalachian Cherry is purchased from northeast manufacturers. Reason? Lumber from this area best color-matches Cherry veneers and hardwood plywood than the Cherry grown in other regions of the country. Appalachian Cherry seldom has the "gum spots and pockets" that are evident in Southern Cherry.

Cherry, Southern

Prunus serotina

Southern Cherry is the same species as Appalachian Cherry...just growing in a different geographic region of the country.  Southern Cherry is generally browner in color than Appalachian Cherry and the grain tends to be courser due to a faster and longer growing season in the South.

Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding has selected five southern mills for purchase of our Southern Cherry lumber. From these mills, the widths and lengths are much better than Appalachian producers. Also, the price of Southern Cherry is lower than Appalachian stock. Southern Cherry produces "gum spots and pockets" that enhance its appearance when used for wood ceilings, wall paneling and cabinetry. Gum streaks and spots and knots not exceeding 1/8" in diameter are not considered defects concerning NHLA grading rules.

Cottonwood, Southern

Poplulu deltoides

This species is sometimes referred to as Delta Poplar.  Southern Cottonwood yields large, clear cuttings at a reasonable price.  If not carefully kiln dried, Cottonwood will twist, bow and cup.  For these reasons, Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding purchases only from producers that take the time to scientifically kiln dry this species properly.
