Taxodium distichum |

"Sinkers"
are logs that would not float and were buried for years
in the soft muddy |
|
bottoms of rivers, lakes, swamps and bayous.
Some "Sinkers" broke away from the log packs being
floated down the river to sawmills. In Louisiana,
thousands of Cypress trees were claimed by the shifting
currents of the Mississippi River and many trees were
felled by hurricanes along the Gulf Coast. |
|
"Sinkers" buried in the
muddy bottoms are located by divers who tie a cable to
the exposed end of the logs. Logs are then pulled
aboard a barge. The sapwood has rotted away but
the resin of the heartwood has left the "Sinker" |
|
|
wood well preserved. The
heartwood cells of old Cypress trees are filled with a
resin termed "Cypressence."" Cypressence"
gives the heartwood its deep reddish-brown
color and makes the heartwood repel moisture and its
oily substance prohibits the growth of rot-inducing
fungi. "Sinker" Cypress is an excellent exterior
wood with a natural color that resembles Teak and is
often termed Dead Head Cypress. |

|
|
This is the same
species as "Sinker" Cypress. Cypress growing in
the "uplands" and younger Cypress trees are termed
Yellow Cypress. Yellow Cypress does
not share the weather and rot resistance with
"Sinker" Cypress. |
|
Pecky Cypress is
valued by architects for rustic wall paneling, wood
ceilings and other special woodwork projects.
Pecky Cypress has elongated pits of cavities.
These "pecks" are caused by a peculiar fungus that
attacks certain trees. The fungus attack ceases
when the lumber is cut and kiln dried. |
|
All Cypress
trees are classified as softwoods. |

Edinam (pronounced eddie-nam) is purchased
directly from sawmills in the Ivory Coast, Ghana, Congo and Cameroun by
Hogan Hardwoods International. Edinam's color is a dark reddish brown.
The wood works easily with both hand a and machine tools but tends to
tear during planing or moulding due to the interlocked grain unless the cutting
angle is reduced to 15º. Edinam is also known as Tiama. |
