Swietenia macrophyllia |
|
Swietenia macrophylla, is
as the common name implies, Genuine Mahogany.
Hailed world wide for furniture, cabinets, boat
interiors, paneling, moulding, flooring, doors and
shutters. Not only is Genuine Mahogany a beautiful
wood, but the heartwood of Genuine Mahogany is an
excellent exterior wood for any exterior wood
requirement. |
|
Pattern Grain |
|
There are no written
rules for Pattern Grain lumber in the NHLA rules
book. The unwritten rule for Pattern Grain
stock is "reasonably straight grained" with no
wooly grain permitted. |
|
|
Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding
directly imports a large percentage of the Genuine
Mahogany we distribute. We import air dried stock
and kiln dry at custom dry kilns to the moisture content
required in our geographic region. After kiln
drying, our hardwood lumber inspectors grade our
Genuine Mahogany before shipments are made to our
customers. |
|
This prized species is
becoming more difficult to purchase due to many South
American countries' new restrictions for export of their
timber as random width and length, rough lumber.
Many South American countries prefer to sell finished
goods (dimensioned lumber S4S, furniture, etc) as
opposed to selling "just" lumber. These types of
regulations improve the local economy by providing more
jobs in their country. |
|
At Hogan Hardwoods &
Moulding, we continue to pay premiums for Genuine
Mahogany. We see narrower widths and shorter
length averages than in the past and "wooly grain"
appears in all grades except the Pattern Grain Stock. |
|
We suggest you try our
African Mahogany when wider widths and longer lengths
are required. |

New Product |
|
Makore is
purchased directly from sawmills in Ghana, Ivory Cost and
Cameroun by Hogan Hardwoods International. Makore is often
termed African Cherry, and the heartwood is rated as
very durable. |
|
The color
is a pink-red to blood red, sometimes with streaks of darker
color. The wood is dense and hard, and the silica in the
wood causes blunting of cutting tools. Carbide-tipped
cutting tools are essential. |

White Maple
Definition: |
|
White Maple refers
to the sapwood content. The terms #1 and #2
White Maple designate the sapwood requirements of
the cuttings and not the requirements of the
entire face of the board (See pages 3-5 under
Grading
Rules). White Maple is divided into two
color grade requirements. In #1 White Maple
the entire cutting (face and back) must be 100%
white. In #2 White Maple the face and both
edges must be white and the back of the cutting
must be at least 50% white. Generally, the
color selections of #1 and #2 white maple are
combined and sold as #1 and #2 White Maple. |
