Hard Maple, Northern

Acer saccharum

Hard Maple is also referred to as Rock Maple, and is a wood of many uses.  These uses include furniture, fixtures, flooring, woodenware, cutting surfaces, school furniture, decorative inlays and bowling alley lanes.

See definition of #1 & #2 White Maple below

Hard Maple trees supply us with maple syrup, lumber, veneer and the decorative grain figures of fiddle-back, quilted and birds-eye.  Most Maple plywood is produced from Hard Maple trees.

Quarter sawn Maple is available by special order

Hard Maple lumber, plywood and veneers are available in curly, fiddle-back and birds-eye figured grain upon request.

(Worm Hole a Defect) Red Maple: Acer rubrum; Silver Maple: Acer saccharinum

Soft Maple has many of the general characteristics as Hard Maple but is not nearly as hard or strong.  Both Red Maple and Silver Maple are commercially marketed and distributed as "Soft Maple".  at Hogan Hardwoods and Moulding, we purchase our Soft Maple from mills that produce lumber that is 80% white-one-face.  Also, we inventory Soft Maple that is 100% white-one-face at a slight premium in price.

Natural Color, Red Maple

Natural color contains both sapwood and heart

Red Maple and Silver Maple Comparison:

Red Maple:  So named for its early spring, bright red flowers that are one of the most conspicuous features of the hardwood forest.  Beginning in autumn, the leaves turn fiery red making the tree again one of the most important spectacles in the landscape.  Silver Maple:  Silver Maple gets it's name from the lustrous silvery under-surface of the leaves.  Both Red and Silver Maple are classified as Soft Maple.
