The
Oaks - Botanical Reference |
|
|
All North
American Oaks belong to the Genus Querus
(Pronounced: Quercus: Kwhere-cuss, kwhere
rhymes with where) |
|
There are so
many different species of Oak cut into lumber
that it seems pointless to list them in our
catalog, as it is not possible to purchase Oak
lumber according to their individual species. |
|
Oak lumber is
marketed as both Red Oak and White Oak with no
attempt to identify the individual species.
The different distinctions between the species
of Red Oak and White Oak are as follows: |
|
|
 |
|
Red Oak |
|
1 |
Leaf lobes
are pointed (bristle-tipped. |
|
2 |
Knots are
larger and looser |
|
3 |
Acorns
mature in two years |
|
4 |
Not water
resistant |
|
5 |
Heartwood
color is reddish |
|
6 |
Sapwood is
more porous and is subject to blue stain |
|
7 |
Freshly
cut wood has a sour, often unpleasant
odor |
|
|
White Oak |
|
1 |
Leaf
lobes are rounded |
|
2 |
Tighter,
smaller knots |
|
3 |
Acorns
mature in one season |
|
4 |
Heartwood is very water resistant |
|
5 |
Heartwood color is tan to brownish |
|
6 |
Sapwood
seldom stains |
|
7 |
Freshly
cut wood has a distinct but not
unpleasant ordor |
|

Red Oak is the most
important hardwood timber in the United States. No
other lumber is better known or more widely used than
Red Oak. |
 |
|
At Hogan Hardwoods &
Moulding, we purchase Appalachian Red Oak from quality
producers located in different areas of the Appalachians
where the color and texture is the best. |
