Hardwood Lumber

Red Oak, Southern (Hogan Red Oak)

Quercus, spp.

Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding purchases fresh sawn Red Oak lumber from only a few selected sawmills.  These sawmills are selected for the following reasons:  1) In a region that has good Red Oak color  2) They purchase good quality logs  3) They quickly saw fresh logs.  We then quickly reinspect the grade, lay out stock that does have poor quality, color or too much mineral, stack on sticks, air dry and then carefully kiln dry.  After removing from the kiln, all Hogan Red Oak is reinspected for grade and sorted for width.  The careful attention given this product has made Hogan Red Oak a real winner.

White Oak, Appalachian

Quercus, spp.

White Oak is the premier species of the Oak family.  American White Oak is a favorite with Europeans.  White Oak is used in architectural millwork, the furniture, flooring and is more evenly textured and easier to work than Red Oak.

White Oak, Southern

Quercus, spp.

Red & White Oak serve as equals for most purposes but with one exception.  Where water is present in conditions as boat parts and exterior entrance doors, White Oak should always be used...never Red Oak.  The heartwood of White Oak is filled with extractives know as "Tyloses" that make White Oak extremely weather resistant and immune to penetrating treatments (See illustration below).

At Hogan Hardwoods & Moulding, we purchase from selected Southern producers where the color and texture of our White Oak closely resembles that of Appalachian White Oak.

White Oak vs. Red Oak For Exterior Applications

White Oak

vs.

Red Oak

Air can be blown through a straight-grained piece of Red Oak because of the open vessel elements.  Dip the piece of Red Oak in liquid dish detergent and you can blow bubbles

Tyloses are film-like growths inside the large pores of certain hardwoods.  These structures can be seen with the aid of a magnifying lens.  In some species like Red Oak, they are sparse or absent, in Hickory they are unevenly distributed and in White Oak are quite numerous.  You can not blow bubbles with White Oak.  White Oak is an extremely weather resistant species and is immune to penetrating treatments.  Red Oak is not recommended for exterior applications.
