The West
African beauty is also called Vermillion and
Corail. African Padauk is rosy to crimson red in color,
and exposure to the wood dust may cause minor respiratory
problems. Padauk is truly one of the beautiful woods in the
world, and its beauty increases with age after finishing. |
|
Padauk is
imported by sawmills from Cameroun, Spanish Guinea and Congo
by Hogan Hardwoods International. |

The word "Pecan" in the
lumber industry may mean any of, or all, of the four
different species listed in the
Botanical Names section. Pecan belongs to
the same botanical family as Walnut and the wood
possesses a similar grain appearance. However, Pecan has
its own distinctive merits and is marketed under its own
name. |
|
One of the most common
misunderstandings with regard to Pecan lumber is that it
is sawn from old, over-mature Pecan orchards. Another
misconception is that lumbermen are cutting valuable,
nutbearing trees and thus endangering the future supply
of Pecan nuts. The fact is that the Pecan nut crop is
harvested from grafted hybrid trees, such trees having
originated in nurseries, like Apple trees, and wild
Pecan trees of the forest produce a nut that is edible
but bitter-in-taste and of little or no commercial
value. |
|
The National Hardwood
Lumber Association (NHLA) grading rule book states: |
|
"A NHLA inspector will not
make a distinction in the specie between Hickory and
Pecan." |

Pinus ponderosa |
|
Ponderosa Pine is often referred to as White Pine. This
distinction is incorrect as Ponderosa Pine in the botanical sense, is a Western
Yellow Pine. Ponderosa Pine is white in color, machines
easily and once was the most important species in the
United States for manufacturing sash and wood doors.
Note: S4S Softwoods are piece tallied and not measured
with a board rule. |
|
Sugar Pine is
also available. |
