Juglans nigra |
|
Most
woods darken with age. Walnut is the
exception. Walnut becomes lighter in color
with age. |

 |
|
lf the forest had a class
structure, Walnut would be among royalty. Black Walnut
is the most respected North American hardwood with a
reputation that dates back to the 16th century. |
|
When fresh cut, the
sapwood of Walnut is nearly white. After sawing into
lumber the boards are "dead stacked", allowing intimate
contact.... one board on top of the other. Next, the
bundle of Walnut enters a chamber where it is subjected
to live steam for 24 plus hours. The live steam "browns"
(caramelizes) the sugars in the sapwood and blends the
sapwood to nearly the brown color of the heartwood. |
|
|
Walnut is a very stable
wood, has great shock resistance (a favorite for gun
stocks) and machines and glues well. |
|
|
INTERESTING FACT:
The use of Walnut foliage makes fleas flee....fleas in
our homes are a problem but according to a report in a
Walnut council Bulletin, when placed in your home will
ensure that fleas will leave to other places.
|
|
"Juglone" is the name of
the mysterious chemical produced by Juglans nigra or the
American Black Walnut tree. "Juglone" may be responsible
for one of Walnut's lesser known attributes. Fleas hate
it, in fact, if fleas find there is "Juglone" around,
they go elsewhere. For those of us who are hunters,
spreading Walnut leaves and branches in our dogs kennel
will keep our pets free of fleas. |

Salix nigra |

Willow is one of the
softest American hardwoods. Its saws and machines easily
but the wood is inclined to be a little fuzzy and
requires sanding. Willow is ideal for furniture parts
and drawer sides. Willow can be stained to a near Walnut
look-a-like. |

Zebrawood is
known as Zebrano and Zingana. As its name indicates,
the wood has exceptionally pronounced stripes of straw and dark
colors. Zebrawood is heavy, hard and has somewhat of a coarse
texture. Primarily used for decorative wood boxes, wall paneling
and fine furniture. Hogan Hardwoods International imports
Zebrawood directly from sawmills in Africa. |
